These mild detergents efficiently solubilise membrane proteins without affecting the native state or activity of the proteins. They are more efficient at preventing non-specific protein aggregation than ionic detergents and are easily removed from solutions by dialysis. Zwitterionic detergents are frequently used in electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing, as well as ion-exchange chromatography.
